TikTok Grants The Community Control to Limit Artificial Intelligence-Made Content in Personal Streams

The platform is rolling out a new feature that allows them to cut down on the amount of AI-created content appearing in their streams. This move comes as the service disclosed that it now features in excess of 1 bn AI-generated clips.

Testing and Rollout

The new functionality is in a pilot phase over the following weeks before a global release. This development aligns with a surge in AI-generated material, driven by emerging video-generation tools.

AI Proliferation Online

Recent reports that almost 10% of the most rapidly expanding channels on a competing service primarily display clips produced artificially. A considerable share of this content is deemed low-quality AI content, a phrase for poor-quality, mass-produced content that is often nonsensical or bizarre.

Based on user feedback that numerous viewers enjoy content created using AI tools, from AI artwork to informative clips, and we want to give people the power to adjust the amount of that, depending on their own choices,” said a platform representative.

Scale of AI Content

The service announced that there are now 1.3bn videos on its network identified as AI-generated. Collectively, more than 100 m videos are added to the platform daily, making AI content a minor part of its total content library.

How to Adjust Settings

Members will be able to limit or boost the level of artificial media they see by accessing the content preference setting in the application and choosing AI-made media. Additional categories that can already be controlled under the filter cover current affairs, fashion, cosmetics, and movement.

AI Disclosure Rules

TikTok’s policies require users to tag lifelike AI-generated content, and it forbids harmful fake videos of celebrities or critical incidents. Any realistic artificial content that is not labeled can be taken down under its user guidelines.

Additionally, the platform will now add an artificially created label to content produced via its proprietary AI systems, or identified by an cross-platform project for recognizing AI-generated material. This action is intended to stop users from attempting to circumvent the tagging system.

AI Literacy Programs

TikTok is additionally establishing a $2m AI literacy fund for specialists and institutions to create informative material about ethical AI use. This initiative will support educational bodies specializing in educating computer science.

Content Safety Approach

The video-sharing app has justified its safety measures, during controversy over proposals to make redundant hundreds of safety staff in the UK. TikTok is planning to reduce a significant number of roles in its user protection department in its British office, with worker representatives and internet security professionals voicing alarm that people are being substituted by machine-led review.

A trust and safety lead explained that people-led review would continue to be important, but AI can protect employees by removing the most distressing content before it has to be seen by staff. The company stated a 76% decrease in explicit and harmful content handled by content reviewers over the last 12 months due to the use of its automated systems.

“We think that it’s essential to balance humans and technology to maintain a secure environment,” the official commented. “We’ll have humans as part of that process, but we further consider it’s very important to minimize viewing of harmful content as rapidly, which is why a significant AI assistance is making a difference operate efficiently.”
